My name is Jacqueline Nelson, and I’ve been exploring ways to bring people together through community projects that also support healing. One idea I’m especially excited about is creating a community garden where people can grow plants, connect with others, and enjoy the calming benefits of nature.

Gardening isn’t just about plants — it can be deeply therapeutic. Studies show that spending time outdoors and caring for living things can help reduce stress and anxiety. For survivors of PTSD, activities like gardening can provide a safe, peaceful space to focus, reflect, and find small moments of joy.

I’m also inspired by online communities and organizations that support survivors of PTSD. Sites that provide education, peer support, and resources make a huge difference for people working through trauma. Combining these resources with hands-on projects like a community garden can create a supportive environment for healing and connection.

My goal is simple: build spaces and projects that help people feel seen, supported, and part of a caring community. Even small steps — planting a seed, sharing a smile, or connecting with others — can make a big difference.

By Jacqueline Nelson. I love this time of year! Spring is awesome! I’ve finally been waiting so long to garden, and here in Duncan, Cowichan, the changing seasons make it the perfect time to get start
